In the early 1950s, a blacklisted screenwriter suffers amnesia during a car accident and finds himself with a new life in a new town. The townspeople think he is a World War II soldier, whom they believed to be dead, returned home. The unlucky amnesiac starts to fit in to this new role, taking a job at the local movie theater, The Majestic, but his old life won't let him go.
